Michael Jackson Fans Pay Tribute to Dead Star
In Mexico City, organisers said they had broken a record for the most people dancing to Thriller at the same time, reporting that 12,937 people turned up.
Fans around the world have marked what would have been Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday with parties and mass dances.
Many tried to break records dancing to Michael Jackson Thriller songs.
In New York, film director Spike Lee staged what he described as a “joyous, festive and celebratory” event.
Other gatherings remembered Jackson in cities including London, Paris, Moscow, Delhi, Barcelona and Bucharest.
An all-day street party near Jackson’s childhood home in Gary, Indiana, featured local performers and a candlelight vigil.
Fans also left messages and memorabilia at his Neverland ranch and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Spike Lee now wants to make his party, in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, an annual event.
“I was just like everyone else. I loved his talent,” said Lee, who directed the music video for Jackson’s 1996 hit They Don’t Care About Us.
The festival attracted up to 10,000 people despite heavy rain, with a DJ playing Jackson’s hits.
Edna Robles, from Brooklyn, said: “It could be thundering, I don’t care. I watched him through the years and I think he’s the best. I love him.”
Many fans at the global gatherings dressed in Jackson’s distinctive attire and danced to his hits.
Mickael Ayeri, in Paris, said: “He’s my inspiration for dance and for song. He is the greatest artist, a complete artist. And when I see, when he died, honestly, I lost a part of me.”
In India, some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, including Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, released a free musical tribute to Jackson.
Jackson’s family had originally planned to bury the pop star on his birthday. But he will now be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Thursday.
On Friday, a coroner ruled that Jackson’s death was homicide, primarily caused by the powerful anaesthetic propofol.
Now Fans Can Go to the Game
Unless you’ve time on your hands, getting hold of a concert or sports ticket before it sells out is not easy. For Instance, the whole U2 have just sold 2,500,000 tickets for their 2009 tour of the States. How does someone who is at work when the tickets go on sale in reality get a ticket?
Go on the web and purchase one.
In the dismal days prior to the internet, you had to buy your second-hand ticket via a dodgy tout at the actual event. This inevitably meant paying double or triple the face value, or even possibly being handed fake tickets which would likely be identified as such as you tried to enter the event - and that means you miss the sports event or music gig while wasting your cash by being scammed.
Nonetheless, things have gotten much better for sports and music fans. The secondary ticket niche has improved remarkably in the last decade or so, thanks to the internet. These days there is a huge amount of competition to resell tickets online, the market has actually become self-regulating. You’re offering the ticket for HOW much cash?! I’ll find a cheaper one on another website Many vendors offer very cheap insurance if the sports event / music gig is cancelled. And with strong competition online, secondary tickets have dropped in price to the stage that sometimes you’re not spending much more than the actual initial value of the ticket. Many ticket purchasers look at prices between lots of traders selling secondary tickets for the same event. They check the sale prices, seating, insurance, and even previous history of the seller prior to making a decision - so the power has considerably moved away from the dodgy tout of the previous times to the ticket purchaser.
Nowadays you can purchase tickets for many kinds of concerts and sporting events. From basketball games to soccer to cricket, to getting hold of front row seats for your favourite band; resale tickets provide a 2nd opportunity to go to the concert you want to see. So what to expect online? Simply use a search engine and enter in your keyphrase like AC/DC Tickets, and you will discover a huge array of resale ticket agents who can offer that ticket to you.
Not everyone is content with secondary tickets however. Some individuals label secondary ticket brokers as leeches, and they’d like to see an end to the resale of event / gig tickets. They don’t seem to see the valuable service resale tickets bring : there are people who simply are unable to buy tickets when they are initially sold.
A British Affair-The Brit Awards 2006
When I stepped onto the red carpet to the excruciating sound of hundreds of little girls screaming “Preston! Preston!” I couldn’t help but wonder whether any of them had even heard of his band, The Ordinary Boys, before his Big Brother fame. After going through a gauntlet of security I took my seat just in time to see the Kaiser Chiefs kick off the show with their killer anthem “I Predict a Riot.” This was the beginning of their domination of the ceremony. They went on to win the awards for best British Group, best British rock act and best British live act. Coldplay nearly equalled them winning two awards for best British single (Speed of Sound) and best British album (X&Y). However, they upset many fans with the news that they intend to “go into hiding” and not release any more music for the next two years.
The highlights of the ceremony for me were the Gorillaz, who had a one hundred strong child choir and an American rapper to spice up their performance of ‘Dirty Harry’. Prince came on the stage looking like a biblical character donned in white robes but still managed to gain a standing ovation. However, one artist stole the show. Kanye West (winner of the International male award) had the Midas touch as he performed his single ‘Gold Digger’ alongside 77 scantily clad female dancers who were painted gold from head to toe. It was a spectacular sight and it showed some of the other less tantalising performers like Paul Weller (winner of lifetime achievement award) how to put on a show.
After the awards ceremony it was on to the after parties. First, the official Brit Awards after party at Earls Court which had a funfair theme where people were drunkenly ramming cars on the dodgems and queuing to see palm readers and fortune tellers. Then the fun continued at Universal’s after party, at Japanese restaurant Nobu in Mayfair, where I spotted Paris Hilton boogying on the dance floor and chatted with Louis Walsh from the X Factor.
This year’s awards clearly show that the British music scene is in the healthiest state it has been for a long time. Could talent have finally beaten good looks?
