All poker players have some losing sessions - it is part of the game. Sometimes though even an seasoned player experiences loss after loss after loss. It is very discouraging and can put a player on permanent tilt. How do you approach and overcome losing streaks?

There are typically a few common reasons why an experienced player suddenly starts losing consistently. If this happens to you, then consider these factors:

* Blatant bad luck - it happens and there is nothing to do about it. However, if this is truly the reason you’re losing, then take heart because luck evens out the long run. It will change. Take a break for a while and come back refreshed.

* Predictable play - perhaps you play poker online with the same circle of players on a regular basis. Or you stick too much to solid A-B-C play. In either case, you’ve become a predictable presence at the table and that makes it easier for your opponents to out play you. Experiment with mixing up your strategies and style so you are not so easy to read.

* Being over your head - you could be playing games that are just too tough for you. Take it down a level to where you are more confident of winning. Don’t take on tough games just to stoke your ego. Play to win, not to prove yourself.

* Re-acquaint yourself with the fundamentals of sound online poker. Read some new books or review training videos. This will help you refresh your games.

I love pocket pairs-I probably love them too much, but they tend to work out for me when I play online poker. I may be a bit too loose with them-I will generally play pocket pairs from any position at any point in the game, and I’ll even call preflop bet of two or three times the big blind, even with pocket 2’s. It can be risky, but flopping a set can pay some huge dividends.

With a big pocket pair, like Kings or Aces, it’s a no-brainer. Often with cowboys or rockets, you don’t even need to draw a winner, but with lower pockets like 7’s or 5’s, you’re facing a bigger risk, because there are plenty of overcards to undermine your pair. With those risks come huge rewards if your flop hits, though, because low sets are the ultimate stealth bomber. If you have a set and there’s no straight or flush possibility on the board, you can just about count on winning the online poker hand, and if you’ve got a low set, no one will be the wiser. If you’ve got pocket 4’s and the flop comes out King-9-4, nobody’s going to think that you went into the hand with pocket 4’s, and if you’re lucky, some clown with an Ace-King will start betting into you and make you rich. Remember this when you play poker online.

The two smallest stacks — both under 10 million chips — at this year’s Main Event final table are up against two huge challenges: chip leader Darvin Moon’s 58+ million chip stack, and celebrated player Phil Ivey, perhaps the most feared name to go up against as a contender. However, the two short stacked players each have plenty of final table experience since both James Akenhead and Antoine Saout were finalists in the 2009 WSOP Europe.
