Eurostar Staff Takes Action Against Loneworking Policy


After Eurostar failed to assure its members that it will not go ahead with implementing a loneworking policy for train managers, they decided to take action just short of a complete strike. The industrial action took place on 10th May, 2010 after a unanimous decision by Eurostar members of RMT

Agitating workers did not operate any passenger service that was not sufficiently staffed with a pair of Train Manager Grade staff on board when the service departed. The action, which began on Monday 10 May 2010 will continue until both parties reach an amicable decision. The staff also refused to collect upgrade revenue from on board passengers between 00:01 hours and 23:59 hours that day.

Bob Crow, the RMT General Secretary said that the chaos that had prevailed on Eurostar last December and the critical support offered by train managers in controlling a dangerous situation should have been enough to convince Eurostar employers not to implement a loneworking policy.

Talking to Morning Star newspaper, a Eurostar spokeswoman said that the service would continue its routine operations even if the strike went ahead, with the Channel Tunnel operations being covered by two qualified train managers. Only under special circumstances would a single train manager be allowed to work. She added that Eurostar was open to all negotiations.
