Paralegal - Bring On The Sun

Paralegals are served by a handful of organizations with two of best being, NALA (the National Association of Legal Assistants) and NFPA (the National Federation of Paralegal Associations). While both aim to serve their members best interests, they are in strange ways competitors. They compete to guide the shape and language of the profession. For example; NALA prefers to call members legal assistant while NFPA prefers paralegal.

Essential fact-finding criteria to keep in mind when analyzing a paralegal program:

1. Teaching practical, usable job skills in combination with fundamental legal principals are an essential part of any quality paralegal schools curriculum. In addition, paralegal degree programs should also cover topics like contract law, legal research, business organizations and legal writing. A quality paralegal school will focus their courses towards the development of an overall higher quality, well-rounded student. This would be done by designing courses that develop students’ hypercritical thinking abilities, organizational skills and their emotional and mental capacity to handle delicate ethical issues.

2. Who are the individuals making up the faculty and the administration of the paralegal school you are looking to attend? Does the curriculum program director have a law degree or minimally have they had solid field experience along with an advanced degree in some aspect of paralegal education? Are the instructors considered to be “experts” in their sphere of influence as a result of their field experience and educational background?

3. Distance learning, also called online learning is becoming all the rage but is getting your paralegal degree or paralegal certificate from an online paralegal school right for you? Online learning is clearly different than traditional campus based learning but regardless of how the information is delivered (i.e. interactive video, tele-courses, etc.) the student / teacher interaction isn’t the same. Plus, online learning takes more self-discipline and motivation than campus learning and you have to make the determination that you have what it takes to complete the assignments.

A paralegal career is more than being an attorney’s flunky, much more. Paralegals are vital cogs in virtually every law office today because they are ones that make the office run like clockwork because they open up time for the lawyers to do their thing while the paralegals do the less flashy but equally important behind the scenes research and office work. Becoming a paralegal is a great career move; so procrastinate no more, get started on your paralegal degree today.
