Charges Dropped against Park Owners in Sledging Accident

Recently a teenage girl named Francesca Anobile died in an accident in Rother Valley Country Park, Rotherham. The victim was sledging in the park along with four of her friends after a very heavy snowfall. The 270-metre high grass ski slope that they chose for skiing had not been used for long, and the group used the roof of a Land Rover as a sledge.

Francesca was thrown off the sledge when it hit a wire stock fencing which had been put up to keep cattle away, and hurt her head, that resulted in her death. The sledge was moving quite fast, according to many eyewitnesses. The accident also caused serious injuries to three of Francesca’s friends.

The HSE began an enquiry in order to find out whether Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, the owner of the park, had taken the necessary safety precautions to ensure that the place was safe or would not pose any danger to anyone using it for recreation. Chris Chambers, HM Inspector of Health and Safety, stated that the employees of the Borough Council who were on duty in the park were not aware of the victim and her friends using the rooftop of the Land Rover to sledge in the park.

The HSE held that the owners had undertaken all necessary measures in order to protect the people using the park, and that the accident was caused not by any fault on their part but due to the use of a makeshift sledge on a very high slope. Thus, the HSE did not make any charges against the park owners.

All employers and organisations need to be aware of important health and safety issues and current regulations that apply in the workplace. See Health and Safety News for a complete guide to IOSH and NEBOSH training and for information covering a range of topics about the main concepts and law associated with Health and Safety.

DC Comics May Take Marvel Head on

Posted by admin in School of Movies

In yet another example demonstrating how slow it is compared to Marvel Comics, DC Comics has finally made the announcement that they will be folded into the larger Warner Brothers structure and relabeled DC Entertainment. The sole purpose is to drive home the fact that the characters are to be exploited not just in comics, but everywhere. Exploited in every possible connotation of the term, good and bad. This move had been in development more than a year, but the surprise acquisition of Marvel by Disney that was sprung on all of us was an embarrassment for Warner Brothers. They moved up their announcement as quickly as they could, timing it just far enough away so it would not look like a “Hey! Me too! Look at me!” announcement. They failed at that, but they couldn’t very well make the announcement the next day, could they? No matter when it was delivered, though, it was inescapable: it’s still a “Me too!” message. With Marvel releasing Iron Man Armored Adventures it is thought that DC Comics may also release their own cartoon version of their superheroes.

The move has been a long time in the making because the good suits at WB have been for the most part miserable at capitalizing on their library of DC characters. Watchmen finally made it out, and Batman has been successful, but everything else has been a miserable failure, or forgotten in mediocrity. Marvel has been the major player in the comic publishing market forever now, and their relatively recent cinema success was a sharp poke in the eye for the guys who had access to DC comics.

It is important to note that the comics guys themselves are not really at fault for any of this. Since Warner Brothers owns DC, they have a “first look” clause. That means if there is to be any proposal to develop a DC character into another format, be it TV show, movie, or dental floss, Warner Brothers gets the first chance to say they’ll buy it and run with the ball. If they pass, then a different company is allowed to come in and offer a bid and try to develop things. In the meantime, the creative teams keep on writing their comics.

The problems date back decades, and mostly center on Superman. Endless millions were spent on lackluster script treatments, and only after Spider-Man’s success did the WB finally pay attention and try to put something out. The result was a failure to meet expectations, a movie that was essentially a love-rerun of the first movie, but with a bastard child and some peeping tom action by the big red S added for flavor. Executives acted like THEY were the ones let down, when they gave approval for that type of thing when they let Bryan Singer take the reins. This disappointment was followed by the suits rejecting Joss Whedon’s plans for Wonder Woman, and letting Ryan Reynolds escape from his desire to play Flash, as that movie also became mired in development hell. “Development hell” became a very common term mentioned in the same breath as most DC movie projects.

A Few Pointers Concerning Manual Handling

Posted by admin in Beyond Cats, School of Health

It’s felt in many businesses that, since every last member of staff has enough health and safety training, they have all the experience required to prevent a catastrophe. The truth is however, a basic education in health and safety regulatory affairs just isn’t adequate. Equipping your staff, choosing good supervision and supporting frequent safety practise sessions are all key factors.

Your staff must have a capable supervisor to watch over the work area, however this person also needs to play an even greater purpose. Whomever you select as the supervisor must be a skilled communicator and also consider training fundamental.

On top of checking conformity with health and safety regulations, the supervisor must furthermore make certain that employees perform all work to the best of their abilty. This is a challenging role. An effective supervisor must possess an in-depth knowledge of the industry best practice and the product in addition to an advanced understanding of the latest legislation with regard to safety, risk assessment and emergency assistance techniques. It’s just not adequate to simply send any staff on a health and safety training program. Your staff have to practise risk assessment and the recognition of hazardous areas. Employees in addition require a solid understanding of the necessary precautions that they are required to put in place as well as how best to manage if disaster strikes. Only when these processes have developed into a habit are staff properly educated. Safety equipment is just as vital to the safety of your workers as the training itself. If they don’t have apparatus they require, or determine that some of the items are not functioning correctly only after something has happened, all the education in the world can not help them.

It is important to examine every last item often to verify that all the required equipment is where it should be and also that everything is in good repair. If you find your equipment isn’t in good condition, ensure it is fixed or call out a service engineer as soon as possible. Your employees need to have the right health & safety training, but in addition they also must have the right apparatus, the opportunity to practise, and a supervisor with contagious enthusiasm. Only then will following health and safety legislation will soon become part of your employee’s working habits rather than something for the workforce to think about all the time.

Heraldic Symbols

Posted by admin in History + More

The term “coat of arms” comes from the french cotte d’armes, which was a tunic-like garment worn over armor to identify a knight in battle or tournament. The set of symbols thereon was then called an armorial achievement. Later, the armorial achievement was displayed on a knight’s shield. Over the centuries, the use of armorial achievements spread throughout the classes and became less regulated. In common parlance, the term coat of arms, or just arms, came to mean any heraldic emblem belonging to a person, family, or organization.

Theoretically, arms may be as simple as an undivided shield with a single shape or straight line. However, since each is to be unique, complexity has increased exponentially over the centuries. A modern coat of arms search may consist of various bearings on a complex divided shield, a helmet, a crest, a motto on a ribbon, a mantle, supporters, and a compartment.

The shield serves as a field for various symbolic elements. The divisions often represent the joining of families by marriage. Multiple divisions represent ancestry. The elements within each division have meaning according to color and form. For instance, red represents a warrior or military service, blue represents truth or fidelity, and purple represents royalty. Likewise, a bear represents strength and ferocity, a goat represents the art of persuasion or politics, and a deer may be used to represent peace and harmony.

The motto also serves to represent the person, family, or organization bearing the arms. Examples of mottos include, “A Deo et rege,” meaning for God and king, and “Arte non vi,” by skill, not force.

Other parts of the arms may be symbolic or stylistic.

Even if a coat of arms is unregistered, as is often the case, a close examination of the elements reveals much about the bearer.
